Tucked in on the third page, under 'News Briefs'

Alarming reports have been surfacing, but remain unverified, that several settlements of wizards, as well as nearby Muggle towns, have experience unpredecented depression over the summer. Some believe this is a result of the Dementors, who have not been seen since escaping Azkaban earlier this summer. The Ministry denies all such reports and in fact barely seems to remember it acknowledge the escape.

Owl to the Twins [Jul. 18th, 2004|11:03 am]

Fred & George,

Where were you two today?  I didn't expect you both to be gone.  We could have used your help!  The wards weren't nearly strong enough to hold in everyone's magic, and everyone had to take turns practicing all their spells--Harry couldn't even produce his patronus because I didn't trust the wards to hold.  It was a disaster.  And I don't know what the two of you were thinking leaving us alone with that--that thing in the cellar.  What on earth was it?  No one wanted to go down there to find out.  We had to shout over all the banging and all the noise, and Ginny spent more time jumping up and down trying to shut the thing up (which didn't work, by the way) than she did practicing her spellwork.

Honestly, you two, we could have gotten in serious trouble if someone had heard us or the wards had broken--it's just a good thing I got there early to doublecheck the strength and make sure they'd suffice.  Between worry over the spells breaking through and the ruckus from downstairs and the floorboards rattling and things randomly falling off the walls and Ginny hopping up and down and people arriving late and everyone treating the meeting as though it were a field trip rather than a highly secret training session, we were all about as stealthy as a pack of wild trolls!

Please say you'll come next week.  Today was so frustrating.  I know what needs to be done in order to secure the wards--I've been reading all about them.  But you're the only ones who can do it without us getting caught.  It's so important we have a safe place to study.  I dread what will happen if the Dementors attack and none of us are ready.  It doesn't bear thinking about.

I'm sorry if this note sounds angry.  I'm not--I'm far more angry at Ron, who encouraged all the boys to bring snacks and practically turned it into a picnic.  On the whole, it could have been much worse--but believe me, today was quite chaotic enough.

Hopeful that we'll talk soon,

Ministry Confirms - Dementors Have Left Azkaban

In an abrupt reversal of official statements, Minister Cornelius Fudge acknowledged today that the Dementors have in fact left the island where Azkaban Prison is located. "We are horrified to admit that the Dementors are no longer under Ministry control," he admitted in a tired voice at his eleven a.m. news conference. "While no prisoners have left Azkaban, we fear that You-Know-Who may possess some measure of control over the... creatures."

He downplayed any need for concern, stating that guards were stationed at the prison and complex detection spells were set around all known areas were wizards reside. Minister Fudge, however, did not address the concerns that some members of our community have for the Muggles in Britain. "For all we know, he could be planning to use them against the Muggles," one bystander said angrily, 'he' refering to You-Know-Who. Others nearby nodded in unison, but another wizard scoffed, saying that whatever the Muggles got, they deserved. It was only the presence of Aurors Shacklebolt and Janis than prevented a riot from starting on the spot, some say.

Recently reinstated Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore stated his intentions to further strengthen the wards surrounding not only Hogwarts proper but also the adjoining settlement of Hogsmeade. "War is coming," he said soberly when approached for comment. "It is my duty to ensure the safety of my students, no matter what. Anyone that threatens a single one of them will have to answer for it."

Any member of the magical community who spots anything suspicious or feels any of the symptoms indicating that Dementors are nearby is urged to contact either the Aurors or the DMLE as soon as possible.
